Re: If you could change one social norm, what would it be?

I’m a freakin’ fat sour-faced little goblin at base level, and I still think the expectation that I have to wear makeup if I’m in public can fuck the hell off.

Who is making this expectation? I mean, I know that some people were raised by moms that thought you had to 'put on a pretty face' for the world, but wasn't that the generation before ours?

For a lot of us, the generation before ours is our boss's. There are expectations, especially if you work in an office setting in a good-ol'-boy profession. Worked for a marketing and advertising place... you could dress and do whatever the heck you wanted! Show those customers how creative even the accountant is! Moved to an orthopaedist and it's skirts, heels, make-up, etc, etc... Orthopaedics is very male dominated, and it shows.

I have a job where I am expected to put on makeup before I come to work. In my case it's kiiiind of understandable, because I work background for films. But I still resent the hell out of it, because it's not like I'm paid for the makeup I use, or the time and skill it takes to apply it. Plus, none of the male BG ever have to do any makeup whatsoever; that's the part that really makes me ragey.
