That sounds like a past-tense description of his feeling as an 18-year-old

And I don't know how angry I can get about an 18-year-old dude thinking that way

Oh no! He fell into the trap the majority of 18 year olds fell into after 9/11. Hell, the trap the majority of Americans fell into.

Uh. I was newly 18 when 9/11 happened, and I thought no such thing. But then, I was super bummed I was too young to vote against Dubya the first time, furious that he won, had Muslim friends in high school, and started as a freshman at UC Santa Cruz not long after 9/11, so maybe I’m not a representative sample.
