Fanon Stiles is the worst. Trrn Wolf in general seems to have a propensity of fix that in no way resemble the source.

the whole genre of Pretty People TV seems very prone to that particular outcome

That fandom is huge and not everyone interprets the character that way. If you like or don't like something, you can still get plenty of results after using search filters on AO3.

Except not all character variants are bequeathed with easily-blacklistable tag names, if authors even think to tag for that in the first place. Same with relationship dynamics (in the vein of general-angle-of-interpersonal interaction, not necessarily shipping).

I haven't read TW fic in ages, but when I was reading it, I didn't come across much of this. Maybe we just lurk(ed) in different parts of fandom/AO3?

Let's see: there's the woobie, the pack mom, the drag queen, the borderline serial killer, the ADHD klutz who can't ever walk two steps without tripping over his own feet... His fanon versions are all over the board.

You need to go to a different part of fandom.

I've seen a fair amount of woobie Stiles stories, but...

I haven't noticed an overabundance of woobie Stiles fic. I mean, it's there, but in about the same proportion as any other big fandom for a popular character they like to make a woobie. I think part of the problem is that canon Stiles is actually a fully fleshed-out character, with lots of different, sometimes contradictory, personality aspects (this may or may not have been intentional on the part of the show writers). And some fic writers tend focus on a few aspects when writing.

So, with too much focus on his panic attacks, getting injured, getting ignored or berated, being human, having a dead mother, etc. he becomes a woobie. With too much focus on his ruthlessness, his shrewdness, and his propensity for violence in fraught situations, he becomes dark Stiles (sometimes even serial killer Stiles). With too much focus on his protectiveness of his father and Scott and Lydia, his mentoring/anchoring of Malia, his big brother-ish ways with Liam, he becomes Pack mom Stiles. With too much focus on his bravery, law-breaking skills, and intelligence he becomes BAMF Stiles. With too much focus on his awkwardness and clumsiness, he kind of becomes Twilight's Bella Stiles. With too much focus on his smart-ass ways, he just becomes obnoxious.

Of course, fic writers may intentionally be playing up the aspects that they like and want to focus on.

I agree with this. I think woobie Stiles only seemed so prevalent because Teen Wolf was so huge.

Though I would love to see more fic where a character's dark side and negative traits are explored (or even emphasized) but they're still a woobie.

Fandom turns every smart-mouthed asshole into a helpless woobie. I don't understand the phenomenon. But it ruins so many good characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
This is sad but true.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah you really have to sift to find good stuff. After I exhausted the first 15 top kudos pages and my favorite author's stuff I kinda gave up.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
SA And I only found two stories I liked on the top 15 kudos pages.
