I'm inclined to agree with the anon who said they felt it was a generational thing. They've had the "women have a duty to look/be pleasant and happy even when they're not" thing drummed into their heads from an early age. Also, women are more socialized to notice other peoples' emotional states and interfere, i.e. "fix" it. So it's probably something to do with how they feel you're sad and they want to help you and they believe that telling you to rearrange your facial muscles and pretend like you're happy is helpful.

Either way, fuck 'em. Do what you want with your face.
