Because she's genuinely awkward and not at all cool, in the same way Jonathan is. Her character is a really interesting, well-done, refreshing version of a character who clearly has some really deep, intense anxieties about life - who doesn't feel comfortable with herself and doesn't feel accepted, and she sees her best friend (from her point of view) abandoning her for a social life that she's never going to be able to participate in. It's a really good, genuine depiction of that specific thing, and it's nice to see that. And no, she's not a perfect person at all, but who is? It's not like Nancy or Steve or Jonathan are perfect either. They're all teenagers.

That's why people liked Barb. She was a well-depicted character and she was relatable. And that's good. The same way it's good with Jonathan. Even if Jonathan isn't a perfect character either.

You're investing an awful lot in what amounted to about 15 minutes of screen time.

Seriously, watch Freaks and Geeks. Millie Kentner did it better and actually got a character arc beyond "judgemental buzzkill fails so hard she dies from it."

No, she's definitely a minor character, but I do really think that they did a pretty nifty job characterizing her in the screen time she got. It was a nice, cool, well-done little characterization job, that people now insist is a terrible person because she got too popular on the Internet. That's really what grinds my gears, I think.

And, like, there can be more than one good character that you like. This isn't the Royal Rumble.

nayrt

No hate, just honest confusion. She was essentially a throwaway. What you saw as a characterization job, I saw as a convenient set of tropes that functioned fine for an unimportant character, which... was fine. I was completely baffled by the adoration, and having been in the MCU fandom too, it smacked too much of the Darcy Syndrome.

Don't get me wrong, it's not worth hating her over, but I really think it's overselling it to call her a "good character".

omigod Millie from Freaks and Geeks!

No. people like barb because they're projecting hard on the unpopular kid who is friends with the pretty girl while shaming her with a vibe of "I'm not like other girls" tumblr likes to make fun of. She was a flat shallow character and the most notable thing about her was how forgetsble she was.

Don't confused Barb fanfiction with real life.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
We're not talking about real life. We're talking about the television show Stranger Things.

Real life meaning what actually happened in the real show. Not whatever fanon the fandom has shit out their ass.

I really haven't interacted with the fandom basically at all

agree with me or not, but this is genuinely my take
