Did they, though?

I mean, they were all kind of awful, in a way. I don't know whether anyone deserves anything but I have a hard time finding any of them really sympathetic anymore even if I still like the book.

How in the world was Cordelia awful?
And while Charles was a jerk, Sebastian wasn't awful, either - he was an addict who was supposed to be cured by religion and, failing that, by a rigid social order.

Charles and Sebastian both were thwarted in love (for each other and Charles for Diana) by religion. While i'm the least sympathetic to Charles for how he treated his wife and children, none of the three i mentioned were awful. And really, neither was Diana. Lady Marchmain was awful, and so was Bridey.
