(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)It's just my level of expectation for characters who aren't Hot

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:39 am (UTC)(link)(Honestly, Bob was a sweetie, but his "Woo-hoo! I finally get to hook up with the hot girl from high school who never noticed me back then!" vibe was the only thing i didn't like about him.)

I really liked Bob and was all, "Oh no, he's going to die, isn't he?" as soon as they took him with, but yeah the pedestal he had her on was a little frown facey for me, even though he did seem to be joking a bit.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 03:58 am (UTC)(link)I felt bad he died (though apparently he was slated to die in the car during the Mr Baldo scene, but the Duffers loved him so they kept him around for 5 more eps -- and I think they used him well. His cracking the drawings was great.
(and I say all this as someone who's low-key shipped Hopper and Joyce since like, ep 1 :p)

I don't dislike the idea of Joyce/Hopper though and it's not like they jumped straight into bed together or anything after his death, so if anything does happen between them I'll be fine with it.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 05:01 am (UTC)(link)I couldn't like him at all, though, because he reminded me of a really horrible former coworker. Coworker was basically Bob if Bob were an alcoholic salesman. Half the shit that came out of Bob's mouth gave me the heebie jeebies. He even looks like that co-worker.
/Unnecessary tangent here, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 06:54 am (UTC)(link)I think if anything Hopper is not in a place where he's likely to be good for Joyce (or anyone), and the writers were aware of that. So they wrote Joyce as doing the smart, healthy thing and building a relationship with a man who absolutely would be good for her and her kids. Which was a bit of characterization I really appreciated. Especially since Bob was kind of great, underneath his general doofiness, and it was nice that Joyce saw that in him.
She and Hopper may still hook up in the future, but I doubt they'll let things get serious between them until Hopper's in a place where he can handle being in an ongoing, stable relationship.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)Ant-Man is the only other recent movie I can think of where the step-parent isn't automatically painted with the "bad guy" brush: Paul Rudd's character doesn't like him, but he's not trying to get back together with his ex, he just wants a relationship with his daughter, and it's clear that the stepdad cares about the little girl (he even jumps in to save her during the fight at the end of the movie).
