I know what you mean but it's hard for me to get really worked up about it

It's just my level of expectation for characters who aren't Hot

Wait... they ended up together? Did I miss that bit at the end?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, but they do have a connection that goes back to high school, and they work well together.

(Honestly, Bob was a sweetie, but his "Woo-hoo! I finally get to hook up with the hot girl from high school who never noticed me back then!" vibe was the only thing i didn't like about him.)

Oh okay, I was like, HOW DID I MISS THAT?

I really liked Bob and was all, "Oh no, he's going to die, isn't he?" as soon as they took him with, but yeah the pedestal he had her on was a little frown facey for me, even though he did seem to be joking a bit.

I was prepared to have him turn out to be creepy because of that. But as far as I could tell his actual relationship with Joyce was very respectful so I ended up liking him and feeling really sad by the time he died, even though that was one of the spoilers I knew.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
same.

I felt bad he died (though apparently he was slated to die in the car during the Mr Baldo scene, but the Duffers loved him so they kept him around for 5 more eps -- and I think they used him well. His cracking the drawings was great.

(and I say all this as someone who's low-key shipped Hopper and Joyce since like, ep 1 :p)

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I really, really hope that doesn't happen. :(

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Bob, but honestly he was only ever going to either be Secretly Evil or killed off. I'm just glad that he got to actually do something before he died, and that they didn't feel the need to turn him into some super-badass right before he died. He was a loveable nerd, and his nerdiness saved the day.

Anyone else caught an echo of "I know Unix" from "I know BASIC."

I wasn't surprised that he died but I was sad about it, the guy was just so nice and good and he was really connecting with Joyce and the boys.

I don't dislike the idea of Joyce/Hopper though and it's not like they jumped straight into bed together or anything after his death, so if anything does happen between them I'll be fine with it.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-11-18 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not seeing Joyce/Hopper yet. Friends, sure.

Yeah I think I'd be happy with them staying as friends/parents-in-arms of kids who went through weird shit.

I'll be good with that too tbh because they really do work well together, and I like how they both care for the kids.

I wouldn't say so, since the character initially wasn't supposed to be as likable but got upgraded to a more mournable love interest in the writing process. They probably always planned on killing him, and Joyce doesn't exactly run into Hopper's bed. They're still pretty much just close friends.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see the point of his character. First I thought he was going to be revealed to be Evil, then I realized he was simply too loving and accepting of the batshit, which was a red flag that he was gonna die.

I couldn't like him at all, though, because he reminded me of a really horrible former coworker. Coworker was basically Bob if Bob were an alcoholic salesman. Half the shit that came out of Bob's mouth gave me the heebie jeebies. He even looks like that co-worker.

/Unnecessary tangent here, sorry.

Just out of curiosity, did you make secrets 3 and 4? Same fandom, same font/font color, roughly same size pics, etc.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Saying Bob was killed so Joyce and Hopper could hook up is weirdly nonsensical. If that's what the writers wanted, they could have just not invented Bob and had Joyce and Hopper hook up instead.

I think if anything Hopper is not in a place where he's likely to be good for Joyce (or anyone), and the writers were aware of that. So they wrote Joyce as doing the smart, healthy thing and building a relationship with a man who absolutely would be good for her and her kids. Which was a bit of characterization I really appreciated. Especially since Bob was kind of great, underneath his general doofiness, and it was nice that Joyce saw that in him.

She and Hopper may still hook up in the future, but I doubt they'll let things get serious between them until Hopper's in a place where he can handle being in an ongoing, stable relationship.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Bob was great, and I'm so glad they didn't go the whole "Bob and Hopper fight over Joyce" route.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Bob was great. It's rare to have that step-parent-type character who's not seen as Literally The Worst. Jonathan wasn't buddy-buddy with Bob, but he wasn't resentful of him either, and he didn't try to "poison" Will against him, and he genuinely seemed happy that his mom was happy. Will even looked up to Bob! It is so, so rare to have that "married to/dating my mom/dad" character be seen as a GOOD thing rather than an interloper/obstacle.

Ant-Man is the only other recent movie I can think of where the step-parent isn't automatically painted with the "bad guy" brush: Paul Rudd's character doesn't like him, but he's not trying to get back together with his ex, he just wants a relationship with his daughter, and it's clear that the stepdad cares about the little girl (he even jumps in to save her during the fight at the end of the movie).
