Counterfeit money experiences?

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2017-11-18 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I found my first fake coin in the till at work today. I'm not the most observant person in the world but this thing looked like it was made out of Play-Doh. Any experiences with fake money? Did you hand it in or try and pass it on?

Yes, I found a bag of slug quarters at my job (thrift store). The same size, weight, and thickness as a quarter, but just blanks. We tossed them into the recycling bin.

I work at a bank so I've seen a lot of counterfeit money. I've caught all the ones I've run across, though I've had some coworkers accidentally take one and have to take a loss. We had one teller who on his first day on a drawer took in some counterfeit twenties that he didn't know were counterfeit until he gave me the strap with them in it (he was over limit in his cash drawer and giving me his excess to give to the vault teller when she came in later). I felt so bad having to hand him back twenties one by one as I noticed they were fake. Another girl was once counting the rolled coin in her vault and realized some of her dime rolls looked off, it turned out whoever gave them to her put a dime on either end of the roll and filled the rest with pennies. After that I always double-checked any rolled coin anyone gave me and actually caught a guy trying to pass me a few dime rolls filled with pennies (he claimed his friend gave them to him and he had no idea they weren't real dime rolls).

All the counterfeit notes I ever got were a joke. Even if the ink wasn’t blatantly the wrong color, they’re always way too smooth and have the wrong thickness.

I've gotten a counterfeit five FROM the bank, as well as a roll of loonies that had a Wonderland token in the middle.

In all my years in retail I only found one fake bill, a $20. We used those markers to check bills and I got sooo many sarcastic "What, you check the $20s now too?" I was surprised when it happened but I think the most shocking part was the customer asking if they could have the bill back. Lmao no. The managers took it and...followed whatever process they were supposed to, I guess. It probably went to LP.

I haven't found any, but apparently at the store where I work cashiers had accepted money that blatantly said on it "for motion picture use only". We've also apparently had issues with counterfeit 100s, but I've yet to run into one.

My mom bought a pizza from a restaurant a couple months ago. One of the quarters in her change was really an arcade token from The Gay Dolphin in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We live near Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The wiseguys where I'm from would sometimes refer to a "Philadelphia roll" as being a roll of bill-sized pieces of newspaper wrapped with a legit larger denomination bill (like a $20.00 or $50.00), and used to deceive. (A Chicago roll is a 20 or 50 wrapped around a stack of legit ones, and a New York roll is a stack of solid, legit high denomination bills).
