I tend to have an unusually sympathetic viewpoint towards villains who are very young, mentally ill, or both. Compared to me, the rest of the fandom assigns them much more awareness of consequences and responsibility for their actions.

If we’re posting characters even we think are trash, I have an unusually negative interpretation of Jasper in Steven Universe. I think she intentionally targets other people’s emotional weak points, and I view a lot of her more sympathetic moments as a performance intended to cause a specific reaction from Lapis or the Crystal Gems. This actually makes her more interesting to me compared to her standard interpretation as an honorable warrior.

With Jasper, I think she absolutely does lash out. I just feel like it stems from her own emotional issues. Not that it's an excuse, but there's a narrative difference between a character who lashes out because they're in pain, and a character who lashes out because they enjoy hurting others.

*pulls up a chair* I'm a 100% down for chatting about my beloved, messed up Jasper! =D

Jasper boils down to this for me: She starts out just wanting to protect her 'homeworld' (Earth) and lets herself fall victim to negativity all around her. Early on, this warps her perception of right and wrong. Yellow Diamond (whom most definitely is looking more and more culpable as the Pink Diamond's murderer) plants the seeds in Jasper's head = revenge. Kill those that oppose you. That'll get your revenge. You're doing it for me, you'll make it seem, but really you're doing it for you. Serving me is serving yourself. This is how emotional manipulation works with gems, I would imagine. YD got Jasper, and likely countless others, to believe they were getting revenge for Pink Diamond - for themselves because, hey, that was my Diamond! - but in reality, she fooled them all into being her puppets - her good soldiers. Jasper didn't know better. She's a phenomenal soldier after all! She probably takes the word of her superiors to heart. Obedient to a fault, at least until Lapis takes her prisoner. Now Jasper has time to think. Has time to mull over everything that's ever happened and she realizes, she needs to take this into her own hands. She needs to be stronger to win - to defend Earth and avenge her true Diamond. There was never anything honorable to her person, only her loyalty to Pink Diamond. And so she sets out on this messed up revenge ride because she's damaged in so many ways she's never realized. Even when it's too late to save her, she's convinced she's doing the right thing because revenge is all she's ever known and there's no way revenge can't fix her. It has to. Until it doesn't.

*dramatic music* lol, or so that's my take on Jasper.
