Back in the early seasons of House, I loved House. I think if I were to rewatch the show, I'd probably like him a lot less, because at this point we've had eleventy billion mavericky asshole geniuses as the leads in TV shows. But back when House first came on, that type of character still felt a bit novel and delightfully sharp.

I rewatched a few months ago and House still just baaarely gets a pass because there's enough vulnerable and tender moments to his mavericky asshole genius persona. At least for the three seasons I rewatched before I eyed the 4th and went maybe not.

Where as, say, Grissom from CSI I just wanted to punch because that's literally all there is to his character. He just exists to be condescending to everyone around him.

Huh. I agree with you about House, but I find Grissom entirely likable and don't find him condescending at all. I mean, he has the odd moment here and there, I guess, but beyond that he comes off as intelligent, pensive, and ultimately kind but a bit emotionally repressed.

the show's writers seemed determined to strip away everything that made House sympathetic after the season 4 rot set in. I liked Grissom but William Petersen doesn't make me ladyspooge like Hugh Laurie does. :)
