Greatest Of All Time

sports slang

Aww shucks, and I was hoping for a Fallout 3 reference.

then why does Charlie Brown get called goat when he loses baseball games?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the English language is really stupid.

The link that the other anon posted goes into more detail, but basically, there are two totally unrelated uses of "goat" in sports with meanings that are totally opposite that are mostly distinguished by context. "Goat" as in scapegoat, the person that you blame, versus "GOAT" as in Greatest Of All Time.

also "goat" as in person that you blame is rather old-fashioned (which is why it gets used in Charlie Brown) and doesn't get used as much anymore whereas GOAT has only come into common parlance relatively recently

Yes, you got it exactly.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
People like that can't find the words to praise their favourites, all they can do is insult other people. You've got to ignore them with a pitying gaze.

Since when have those people started popping up? Because if it's been during the past year more or less, they come from the Yuri on Ice fandom, mostly because the main character is basically directly inspired by Hanyu. And that fandom has a lot of assholes in its ranks.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I figured as much, since Kubo-sensei is a skating fanatic (although her favorite is Kozuka Takahiko), but even before the anime came out Yuzu seems to attract the worst new fans, ones that need to be reprimanded for being too loud in venues, etc. And online-wise like I've said, they act like it's a ship war when we're just supporting these kids and wanting them to do well :/

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that’s not true. Pay no attention to AYRT. Yuuri is based mostly on Machida Tatsuki. Yuzuru only got a Passing cameo.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't change the fact a lot of the most toxic people in figure skating fandom has YoI icons/usernames.

Like I said, IRL *and* online he attracts the worst fans. I feel sorry for him.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
What. Nothing about Yuuri is remotely inspired by Yuzuru other than that he’s a japanese guy with a name starting with y. It’s been confirmed he’s mostly inspired by Machida tatsuki.

It’s even in his fucking Wikipedia page lmao

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatsuki_Machida

If you’re gonna come at a fandom maybe don’t make assumptions. The author and director are fans of lots of skaters.

Could have sworn I read one of her tweets where she said this, so oh no, I was wrong my bad. Anyway, doesn't change the fact that a lot of new fans started being interested in ice skating because of YoI and since Hanyuis one of the biggest names right now, it's really no surprise they latched on to him.
And "come for a fandom"? Which skater the character is based on has jack all to do with the rotten shit this fandom has been up to. Your attitude and overreaction here is pretty fitting for the fandom though.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Even if a lot of fans came from Yuri on Ice fandom - Hanyu's fans have been rabid for a lot longer than YOI. There's a group on FB where the fans are delusional to the max; one girl says he's keeping her alive and that she wants to take his injury from him. That's not YOI, that's just insanity.

Agreed - a lot of the new fans have come from the anime, but it seems very generalizing to say the bulk is crazy. It's more that the loud minority shadows the quiet majority. And given that Hanyu didn't inspire the protagonist, it's more that they've taken an interest in the skating afterwards.

Yikes.
And yeah, I know the fandom is not all bad. I didn't say it was.

As soon as I read the first three sentences, I said" Yuzuru?"

Yeah, his fans are right up there with those of Kim Yu-na's for the sheer Crazy. Yu-na's are fucking BATSHIT.

ETA: I actually love Yu-na--she is a class act and I love her skating (she was robbed in Sochi, IMO). Love her, but the fans are the worst.
