I'm not sure who these characters are, but I know how you feel. I've recently gotten really into a show (a super embarrassing "old people" show that I doubt anyone here watches) and have thought this exact thing multiple times. Two of the main characters have this amazing friendship and I'd much rather have that relationship than a romantic one anyday. (And I frequently think "they need to just give up on romance, because they've both had horrible luck with it anyway, and live happily ever after together platonically"...but I'm pretty sure that's considered weird. :P)

They are Maedhros and Fingon from Tolkien. They are first cousins. Their fathers did not get along so well (well, mostly Maedhros' father hates his brothers).

There are a lot of bits of their story that speak to their closeness, but the biggest for me is when Fingon, although believing Maedhros betrayed him, goes into the enemy territory to rescue Maedhros, who has been there for something like 20 years. No one else is brave enough to even try.

I can't help thinking of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. But I'm sure there are a ton of other possibilities.

wasn't the whole point of that show that all the male characters were in love with Mary Su-excuse me, Tyler Moore?

That idea was definitely there, but she never seemed to have a long-term relationship and a lot of the dates she went on were terrible. (Probably because that's funnier than good dates.)

Um...

Will & Grace

*hides*

no reason to hide, if you like that show, you do you

(Anonymous) 2017-11-20 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, thanks. It just doesn't seem like a very FS/fandom friendly show, like it's probably considered dorky and lame. (And in RL everyone I know that likes it is around my parents' age, or at least older than me.)

My favorite show is Starsky and Hutch, which even my mom thinks is stupid, and I feel the exact same way about the main characters' relationship. So yeah, I understand completely.

I had no idea Will & Grace was considered an old people show. That might be because according to fandom, I qualify as an old person. :\a

(Anonymous) 2017-11-20 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I guess it has been nearly 20 years since that show premiered, but I tend to think of "old people shows" as the kind of thing I watched on Nick at Nite growing up, which means stuff like The Dick Van Dyke Show and Dragnet. I can also allow things from the 80s that were not aimed at kids like Hill Street Blues.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-21 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Neither did I.

I like "Will & Grace" :). It's a fun show, and I'm enjoying the reboot.

Will & Grace was the shit! I grew up with that show. It's not old, not really.

NCIS, Gibbs/Fornell?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But they're so BOOORING! I'd rather have someone like say, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (or their characters): believable, real and funny, any day.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-19 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm calling troll. There is no way anyone else would consider comparing Tolkien to Simon Pegg a reasonable comment.

you can connect those two through Martin Freeman.

Sx degrees of Kevin Bacoooon. Are we doing this with cinematic universes now?

I fully support this.
