You are wrong for the most part. It's not because of how low the bar is set. It's because their parents and other authority figures almost drown them in praise and admiration. How can you be equipped for the real world when everyone in your life treats you like a demi-god? Add into that they are smart enough to see how bad the world is and without all that love and admiration they used to have as children they become disillusioned burnouts.

My parents were really good at not feeding into the major problems with over-praising intellect. The problems I did have were, like... being really good at Jeopardy! at age five has no bearing on being able to have a career later in life-- it doesn't even have any bearing on being able to succeed in the public school environment. I was great at taking tests, but I would fail math worksheets because I couldn't 'show my work' when I got the answer in my head and didn't know how I got it. And when I hit the point where I needed to study, I was set up to fail because I'd never needed to study before (and when you get to high school and you've never had to study before, no one can really teach you how, you get a lot of guff from people when you point out how hard it is to learn these skills late...)

This was me. I did so well with basically no effort through my freshman year at college. So when I finally needed to study in college, I was rather screwed, as I couldn't focus and do it.

Yup, same. Add to this the fact that I subconsciously didn't want to stody, because all my life I've been told that smart people don't have to study, they just use their smarts to figure stuff out. So, in my head, studying meant admitting that I'm really dumb.
