Wow, I have this level of anger for Turin, but completely disagree with Luthien and Beren. Galadriel is the ultimate Mary Sue. Luthien is great.

Turin is also complete rubbish, but the way he's written isn't supposed to be sympathetic whereas Beren and Luthien are. Turin's an arrogant asshole who makes stupid decisions and brings about death and destruction, but we see it coming from the beginning and are free to hate him. He also suffers an appropriately tragic end.

But he doesn't learn. He may be cursed but his actions are his own, and the text doesn't call him out nearly enough. I would say it's way more sympathetic to him than he has any right to.

I agree that Luthien and Beren are sympathetic but I don't see that as a bad thing because I think there's no reason not to sympathize with them. I don't see them as selfish.

This is also how I feel about Turin. Hurin I love (and he needs more fandom love). But Turin may be the only Tolkien character I outright hate.

I have to ask... what about Maeglin? He is sort of on the same level as Turin for me.

I dislike both him and Eol, but I wouldn't quite use the word hate. I think Maeglin is massively overrated in the fandom. And I very much don't like him. He just doesn't reach the level of Turin.
