All the cultural references to it made me believe the part where the angel shows him what the world would be like without him led me to believe that was the whole movie, but nope, you have to see his whole life story, too, and it's boring.

The movie actually did very poorly at the box office. The reason it became a Christmas TV staple was because the studio couldn't be bothered to renew the copyright, so TV stations could show it for free and they did it so much it became a tradition.

it's sickeningly insipid. I also do NOT appreciate some fucking movie telling me that being a woman and not being married is some sort of fate worse than death.
