Well, if they do know, they're either gonna judge you for it or find it amusing. I always kind of thought the point of wearable merchandise, besides advertising the subject and making money for the company that owns it, was as a kind of shout-out to other people who enjoy the same thing. I'm sure most people who would carry such a bag would risk the ire of the people who think it's stupid for the potential conversation-starter with someone in the same fandom (if you can call hentai a fandom, I guess).

No one can get away with being negatively judged by their appearance. I'll bet the people who shop in your "upscale" store get their share of dirty looks. And yeah, on the whole, it will be a minority of people who look at a "hentai inside" bag and feel disgusted. The majority of people really aren't aware of what it means. This person's probably not gonna take the chance and walk into a job interview with it, but since it's not really explicitly obscene and they can't exactly be thrown out for it, I doubt they give a rat's ass what people in a store think of it.
