147. I don't play the Suikoden games, but I've heard this sentiment amongst my friends who do play them... soundly mocked, because the basis is generally the lack of an imaginary slash couple. I hope that's not the only reason.

The death of characters in video games tends not to bother me overmuch - I mean, they're fictional characters, right? When he died I was more angry than sad.

...Then we got to Tartarus and Aki said "did you see that, Shinji?" and I was all BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW ;_;

On the other hand, I'm glad the main character isn't alone.

I got spoiled a while back for that scene (by some jackass who thought it'd be 'funny' to see how I'd react), and I haven't played since. I'm still in May.

(Seriously, who does that?)

The same kind of people (i.e., my brother) who spoiled me for Aeris' death before I even played FF7 so I never really bothered with the character from the get-go? (In other words, I can relate.)

Are you me? O.o Not only did my brother spoil me for Aeris' death, I've been spoiled for the deaths of the everyone in the last three damn games I've played. Fandomsecrets, I pay the price...

Oh no, that's not it at all. My issue with III is that it ruins just about every long-standing tradition in the Suikoden franchise that made it unique in the first place in favor of giving it a super-cliched Final Fantasy-esque villain, completely smacking sense and established characterization across the face in the process.

I fell in love with I and II because the idea of a relatively small-scale game about war and politics was exciting and different, but III just turned it into another case of "Oh no, the villain is trying to destroy the WHOOOLE WORLD for no real reason!"

But does he have a trenchcoat and mother issues?

Man there's plenty of slash if you see it. Just not the ones people are looking for. Though tbh I didn't think III was that bad, indeed it's probably

wredwrat's favourite of the series. (Personally I preferred II, but unlike the OP I judge games on their own merit, and no on how much of a clone of the game is to the previous ones in the series.

IMHO the Suikoden are good stand-alone games that worldbuild on each other. Which to me is the strongest aspect of the series. Each one is pretty solid with the exception of IV which was balls. (What I'm saying is if you've a hankering for a more traditional JRPG you could do a lot worse than Suikoden. It was my favourite game series before megaten crossed my path :P My favourite protagonist ever is from the first game so. :D)

I'd love to give the series a try, as I've heard many good things about it, but the gentlemen down at EB laughed when I asked about them as told me outright that if anyone were ever foolish enough to bring in a copy of the old games he'd snap it up personally and sell it on eBay.

On eBay, of course, the original two games sell for $100 a pop :/

IV and V are set before I and II in the timeline and are much easier to find, if you're serious about giving it a whirl. (Which you should.)

I don't recommend starting with IV though.

....that's actually kinda.....difficult to imagine. Out of 108 characters, there's bound to be at least one fanon couple.
