I think he loses that ability by LOTR. I'm actually more interested in other Maia and Valar having the ability. I really want to see fic where people see Gandalf in his real form (or the one he takes in Valinor). And, I'm also curious if Elwing continues to be a bird (I think it states somewhere she does but it might be pre-Canon material).

Versions I have seen of Elwing's story seem to imply she turned back, so that version is probably only early material.

He at least loses the ability to take on a fair form post-Numenor. Not sure if he can take on other forms, though, or if he is stuck in his dark lord form like Morgoth was.

I remember that fic. Possibly the only time anything remotely related to bestiality seemed hot to me. It may just be that I'll accept anything with my OTP. I don't know.
