I don't hate his writing, but I kinda know what you mean. He has great concepts and his ideas really... I dunno. They really hit my "OHHHH YEAH GIMME" spot, but the actual book itself usually falls short of what I was hoping for.

good world builder, really great with secondary characters - main characters are flat as pancakes with no personality for easy self-insert and the plots always end up being windy and pointless while looking like they're going somewhere. Gaiman is all about fascinating presentation with super sounding bells but no follow through. He does much better with short stories where he's only allowed one idea to expound on. I can understand why he's a popular writer because so many of his ideas are unique twists on story ideas we love but I will never call him a 'good writer'.

The same way I won't call King a good writer because he can start and carry a story but he can't end a story to save his soul.
