What kind of filthy animal uses sponges in the first place? There's a reason dishrags have been the most popular choice for as long as people have had dishes to wash.

But, to answer the question... I end up fucking up my headphones at least once a year. Generally it's the cables that are a problem (they get smashed or pulled out of alignment no matter how carefully I pack my bags). It blows because I'm really picky about sound quality and comfort so I always end up spending too much on a new pair.

I use sponges with a kind-of metallic weave outer casing that is good for mild-strength scrubbing.
