We my husband was in the Marines we lived in a nothing blip of a town in the middle of the hugh desert, and there was a fresh off the boat Italian who set up his little restaurant - a kitchen and some plastic folding tables- in the back end of a convenience store. We literally sat beside the Monster and Red Bull fridges. But he made the best chicken parmesean in the world.

there used to be a little mom and pop grocery store in Berkeley, Calif. that had steam tables in the corner and they made and sold really amazing curries. Not expensive, either.
