My husband has tried Goodreads to find novels and it's been hit and miss, even books that everyone says are good turn out to be unreadable for him. So he doesn't purchase anything before reading it. Luckily our library has a decent sci-fi/fantasy selection. If he liked the book or series, then he'll purchase a copy to support the author. We'd probably buy more however our rule is nothing over 7 dollars. So we have a lot of authors on wishlists and are waiting to see if there are any sales.

The library I can walk to has a decent fantasy selection as well, thankfully. I would love to buy the books of authors I like, but I just can't afford it. There is one author whose books I always buy, but thankfully that usually corresponds to gift cards kids in my class give me for holidays or the end of the year. If ever I win the lottery or something I'll definitely do more. For now I just make sure I support them somehow whether it is the library or kindle unlimited. I think your method is a good one too. I will cross my fingers that books go on sale for you.
