Have you ever boycotted something?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What was it and why?

Re: Have you ever boycotted something?

Chick-Fil-A because of their donations to anti-LGBT+ groups. My family still gives me shit about it (not because they're against LGBT+ rights, but they think boycotting things is stupid).

boycotting things isn't stupid, it's about the only form of protest big companies pay any attention to.

I boycott them too, although for years this was an empty gesture because I would have had to drive over 2 hours to get to one. They're around here, now, but I rarely eat fast food anyway, so it's still kind of an empty gesture.

Right there with you.

Well... it's not stupid in the sense that you have a right to decide NOT to spend your money somewhere. But they're not terribly effective, no.

I think Chick-Fil-A must be one of those things that you've got to be raised on to "get." They're not a thing in my geological area, but I've been to the midwestern US and... it's an alright chicken sandwich.

Choosing to eat somewhere that isn't run by obnoxious fundamentalists doesn't seem like much of a burden. Pretty much everyone sells chicken sandwiches these days.

I never spend money so it's kinda hard to boycott in the first place.

I've boycotted Nestle over the baby formula thing for years. At this point it's not so much an act of protest on my part as a force of habit. It's surprising how many products are from Nestle, but in the US, at least, it's very easy to avoid Nestle products because there's always another option.

Papa John's - owner is a douche, pizza sucks.
Curves (exercise place) - they give to anti-choice organizations.
Salvation Army - far-right Xian agenda that's very anti-LGBT
Wal-Mart - they are Satan
Quite a few other things, over the years.

not surprised about curves, bunch of bible thumpers

Re: Have you ever boycotted something?

The only one of these I've been consistent on boycotting is the Salvation Army, although I don't make a habit out of going to Walmart, since there's none close by and I can get anything I might buy there from someplace else. Never been to Curves, not planning on changing that. I'm pissed at the Papa Johns' owner being a shitweasel, but I occasionally buy their pizza because it's cheap and there's one near my house. I tip the poor workers, though.

Enders Game. Wound up watching a hookie version online. Motherfucker sure can do a good scifi yarn, I'll say that for him.

You're talking about the movie everyone hated rather than the book?

Jeffree Star Cosmetics and Lime Crime Cosmetics

Re: Have you ever boycotted something?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I didn't think there were any people into makeup here, but I boycott both of them too. Also Kat Von D for anti-semiticness, Gerard Cosmetics for being owned by asshat bullies, and Jouer Cosmetics for collaborating with Jeffree Star and MannyMUA, who was also part of the Gerard Cosmetics bullshit.

I boycott Jeffree Star for a super-petty reason; he made one of my follow baristas cry. She was a fan, he came in, I'm not sure what went down but it ended up with her crying in the back and me trying to run the register AND make the drinks all by myself.

Multiple things, usually on LGBTQ issues. Most significantly the Boy Scouts of America until recently (although their religious discrimination makes me not inclined to support them.)

Also, Twitter and Tumblr because of moderation policies. I keep Facebook for family reasons but rarely ever visit or post there.

A few fast food places for animal rights reasons, when I was an idealistic teenager. Boycott are dumb, though. You're just depriving yourself, while no real difference is probably ever going to get made. Why bother?

Chik-Fil-A
Papa John's
Wal-Mart

For the same reasons as stated in other replies.

Urban Outfitters because the owner is a huge homophobe and also because they keep stealing designs from indie creators.

Lululemon because their CEO is a sexist ass who has some problem with anybody who doesn't want kids and he's also prejudiced against Japanese people.

If you mean by "not spending my money at that place/buying a specific product?" Then yes. I REFUSE to buy Papa John's pizza and I haven't bought a Chick-Fil-A sandwich/biscuit in like...5 years.

I also haven't stepped foot into a Hobby Lobby since they through a fit about the ACA. Fuck those so called "christian" people.
