Sorry, OP.

I'm in fandom for the shipping, mostly - the rest I can do on my own - so I can't relate much, but that sucks. :(

To clarify, I know why other people aren't and I try to respect that when fellow fandom friends tell me so...

+1

Oh man, I know how you feel. Fandom is sooo hyperfixated on shipping that it just overshadows everything else.

I mean, I'm guilty of shipping too, but sometimes it would be nice to focus on other things and not make everything about shipping in times where it's not relevant in canon.

My advice is to find fans of a character/actor that you like. I don't really do shipping either, but I've always found fandom friends and good discussion by finding other fans of my fave character/actor in a show.

I certainly have some ships that I do ship, but I've always preferred my fanworks to be more gen - meaning, more plot-driven, more like an episode, and less like a PWP or purely shipper scenes. So yeah, I think I know where you're coming from.

Yeah, for most of my fandoms I don't ship anyone and am bored by porn so there's not much for me. It kinda sucks sometimes but what can ya do? :/

I'm a long-term gen lover (I also read shippy stuff when it's got good plot or interesting characterisation apart from the ship) and the level of gen writing varies hugely from fandom to fandom. Your best bet is a mega-fandom like Supernatural or MCU or Harry Potter - while 99% of the focus in on the shipfics, the fandom is so huge that there's a really good chance of finding excellent gen fic too, or at least interesting plot with the ships.

I so much relate. It's not that I mind shipping, at all, but I've never understood the need to discuss and dissect and squee over that one aspect to the exclusion of anything else. I'm just not wired that way I guess. And so many times it's like "yeah that's cool, guys, really cool, but what about this other thing? This is also cool, right? Can we talk about this too?" (No I'm not really saying those words.) It just gets frustrating sometimes, never being on the same wavelength. :(

I don't really 'get' shipping. It doesn't do anything for me.

I hear you, OP. I'm not really into shipping and certainly not to the extent that fandom tends to be. It's why I rarely read fic. I want a good plot where people are in character but in most fanfic, plot and characterization are a very distant second to the ship and porn. I don't begrudge people their shippy fics and porn, but it'd be nice to have some diversity.
