When you get into a show, do you feel like you need to watch every episode?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-28 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
So, when you start watching a new show, particularly a long-running one, do you feel like you need to watch every episode? Or if there are certain episodes (or even seasons) that are widely regarded as awful, do you skip them?

(Examples: It seems like seasons 8 and 9 of the X-Files are particularly unpopular; the last couple seasons of House; the last season or two, and especially the finale, of HIMYM; the last couple seasons, especially the finale, of Dexter; the finale of Lost, and the last couple seasons for some people; the later seasons of Bones; the last several seasons of Supernatural, etc.)

I usually do watch everything, but sometimes I do it wildly out of order. Especially if I got into it late, or if someone I like is only in these couple seasons. Then I'll watch that first, and go back for the rest later. I don't care a damn which seasons other people happen to like, though.

Yes, mostly. But I'll stop if I stop enjoying a show, like with Supernatural or Bones or House. But if I get into something, I will always go back and watch the earlier episodes (except with Doctor Who, where I've only watched a smattering of Old Who episodes).

by the last five seasons of House I was just watching because I want to have sex with Hugh Laurie twelve million times, I'll cop to it.

I'll sit through all the episodes, but I'll only pay attention to the ones that capture my attention. The boring ones are just background noise while I'm doing chores.

I usually do, but sometimes, I'll skip a lot of it.

For example, I just started TWD, this season. I'm only going back to S7 because I love JDM, but part of me wants to see the transformation of the characters and their development (i.e. Carol). But I don't have the time investment. Alternatively, I'll probably get sick of it around S3.

I did something similar for SPN: I got on around S4,saw all of S5, and have jumped around here and there over the years. I bought S1-3 DVD around S5, and I didn't finish it. So...i know I'll get tired and let it go.

I always watch every episode (and play every side quest in a game, and read every story in a series, and so on).

idk it seems weird to me to NOT watch all of it? What if some ep I did watch referenced an episode I skipped? Plus what if I like those "bad" episodes?

Also I've never watched a show that got really bad that somehow improved in later seasons. (I mean I don't watch a lot of TV so I'm not saying it's impossible.) But you aren't going to convince me that current TWD is somehow better than the shitshow of "No Carl, guns are bad" prison-arc TWD.

Yeah, same. Even if I don't like the "bad" episodes, I want to see them just so I don't feel like I missed anything.

Yeah like this thread is making me think of old school Sailor Moon. I've seen so many people over the years recommend watching it but just skipping all the "filler" episodes. And it's like... the filler episodes actually add a lot of character development to the show? Maybe they aren't the most exciting, but if you cut them out you're left with a bunch of characters you know nothing about.

All of this. I like having the complete story, and seeing how the show progresses and changes over time.

Now, after I've properly gotten into a series and seen all the episodes, there'll likely be episodes I'll rewatch more often than others, sure, but even then, yeah, I still like having all the episodes there. Sometimes episodes I don't care for upon first viewing can grow on me with time, and whether I like an episode or not, it's nice to have it there in case I need to refresh my memory about something or other, too.

I recently watched all 275 episodes of Cheers in 26 days, so yes, I firmly believe that if you're going to get into a show, you start with 1x01 and watch every episode.

I thought it was so stupid when people told me to start with season 3 of Parks & Rec. Like no! I'll miss so many references later in the series!

But I totally get stopping watching something if you don't like it. But you gotta start from the very beginning!

I can't stomach the Kirstie Cheers eps. Not only because she's a terrible actress (I kept thinking Rebecca was lying) but the writing got noticeably dumber.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

I will always start from the beginning of a show and watch continuously. Like with House, when I started watching, they had just begun Season 3, but I watched the first two seasons on DVD before I started the third. I can't imagine not wanting to see the history of the characters and how everything developed, and I would assume there would be references I wouldn't get. However, I often bail on a show if I stop liking it. I won't force myself to watch through to the end if I'm not enjoying myself. I gave up on House, Bones, Supernatural, NCIS, The walking Dead, and many more. Apparently I'm very picky? If I heard they got better again, maybe I would go back again and try to catch up, but I can only think of one show off of the top of my head that I started watching again after giving it up.

Depends on the why. I skipped S1 of Parks and Rec because I really can't handle cringe humor. But a lot of time I'll give it a shot. However, if a new season has three episodes in a row that I don't like I'll usually drop it.

Unless it's a long serial or a forever long shounen anime where I might have gaps between viewings, I'm generally a completist if it's something I really want to get into. The flip side of that is I don't enthusiastically get into series anymore so I either don't start or finish things. The only things I'm following regularly are The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead though it seems the trends now are to drop the first and hate on the latter, The Good Place, and Boruto even though I never finished Boruto's Dad-- I mean Naruto. There are some anime that I started but I don't know how I feel about them so I'll see about those.

I'll only watch the seasons I can get my hands on legally. Because piracy is wrong.
