I hated it for the same reason. I can't bring myself to reread the series either.

I got hooked on the books in middle school. For some reason they were on the accelerated reader list. At my school, you'd read books on the list and take a quiz when you were done. You would get points based on your quiz score, what level the book was, and how long the book was. Gone with the Wind was 71 points, The Cat Who series average was 10 points, and the Boxcar Children series average was 2 points. Once a month, the librarian would open a little store and you could use the points you earned to buy stuff. Prizes included books, movies, school supplies, candy, CD players, and even a bicycle. I'd check out a Cat Who book, read it on the bus and before bed time, take the quiz, and get a new book.
