American comics

(Anonymous) 2017-11-29 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I like weird stuff that looks good and is self contained. No superheroes, ideally.

By self contained, do you mean like 1 volume graphic novels, or just stories with a start and an end that doesn't tie in with other stuff?

Stuff that doesn't tie in with other stuff.

Could you expand on 'weird stuff'? Do you have any comics you already like as comparison?

Surreal color use, non-conventional plots, anything people joke about the creator being on drugs.

Ashizuri Suizokukan is a good example of what I'm talking about.

Black Hole by Charles Burns is very surreal and disturbing.

Edit: Rice Boy also has a lot of surreal elements.

Why does it have to be American??? Do you mean, not Japanese manga-style (in terms of art?), or do you mean, must be created by an American?

Re: American comics

(Anonymous) 2017-11-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I should have said anything non-manga (because I already read plenty.) I'm trying to branch out, but finding stuff is intimidating.

Ursula Vernon’s Digger is the equivalent of one fairly big book, and it’s complete and still online for free. She won a Hugo for it a few years ago, and it’s got a kind of scratchboard thing going on. Yeah, it’s got talking animals, but there are humans and undead demon gods and drunk druids, some of the characters may make you cry (I know they did me) and you should know if you like the art by 10 pages in. Vernon writes popular kids books under her real name and adult fiction as T. Kingfisher.

My pull list: Saga, The Wicked and The Divine, Rat Queens, Shutter.

Lazarus looked good and is getting a film adaptation.

Heard good things about Lumberjanes but have not gotten into it yet.

Oh man, I started Lazarus when someone loaned me the first trade. I meant to keep reading it, but totally forgot (I was temporarily living in the middle of nowhere for work and did not have the time or money to pursue it further).

candle_beck is mostly Josh/Sam
http://archiveofourown.org/users/candle_beck/pseuds/candle_beck/works?fandom_id=450

I used to get stories from here though: http://bigblock.westwingstories.com/

There are also a few Josh/John Marbury, Josh/Toby, and Josh/Matt Santos fics floating around on AO3, if you want to try those out, but I have no recommendations.

insanenoodlyguy's johnlock fic

(Anonymous) 2017-11-29 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
i think. it was either that or some other popular slash ship.

Re: insanenoodlyguy's johnlock fic

(Anonymous) 2017-11-29 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
If someone from this comm wrote Johnlock I WANT IN. Johnlock is my jam, it'd be fun to read some fic and know it was connected back to FS.

Hurt/comfort porn

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-11-29 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, mostly comfort porn really. Just, characters getting taken care of and getting what they need and everyone is happy and satisfied.

A strange and interesting Tales of the City and Hard Core Logo crossover, with a little due South. Brian Hawkins/Billy Tallent as played by Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie (who played Benton Fraser and Ray Kowalski in due South, respectively). There is definitely hurt, but it mostly takes place off-page before the fic starts. http://aukestrel.com/fic/shadowsfade.html

Karen Davis' Fairer Than Death (Power Rangers - Billy/Jason) Billy is hurt in a fall and Jason deals with it. http://www.stories.the-ridges.net/fair1.html She also has some lovely Battlestar Galactica (original) fic.

Blue Champagne's DS9 The Crisis Team series and the crisis team series continues has quite a bit of hurt/comfort in it and goes from Julian/Miles to Julian/Miles/Keiko. http://web.archive.org/web/20021130060747/http://home.mindspring.com/~bluecham/

This just reminded me, but I recall some anon fic meme where people wrote RPS of fandomsecrets people at one point back in the LJ days. Does anyone remember where that was?
