Holmes and Watson is a weird one because - as much as I love Watson, and don't want to undervalue his role in the series - his practical contributions to the actual fighting of crimes mostly amounted to "can use a gun on occasion".

I can't agree. Even if you leave out the obvious role of chronicler, he's Holmes' right hand man. Holmes trusts him to be his eyes and ears in Hound of the Baskervilles and he's usually better at the human interaction aspect of cases than Holmes is.
