This is a beautiful secret in every sense of the word <3

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Otherwise reasonable people fucking losing it is possibly the whole point of football fanaticism.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's completely impossible to respond to this secret without knowing what the actual argument is about. The secret might as well just say "I don't like it when you disagree with me".

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
/shrug Maybe it's just you, I understand it just fine and I don't even follow football.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I understood what they're saying. But it's fundamentally one person's side of an argument, presented basically without any context. I just have a hard time taking it at face value that OP is totally reasonable and polite while the people they argue with are combative and so goddamn crazy.

And also, "progressive with issues" is so nondescript and vague about the content of the argument that it makes me leery.

NAYRT

I mean, that bit about being "reasonable and progressive" might just be there to indicate that, on non-football issues, this is a person who is non-combative and sane no matter what the other side is like.

This isn't about a person, it's about a football club. I think it's safe to say that you do not in fact understand what OP is saying. It isn't about an argument, it's a fan expressing frustration with the thing they're a fan of.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, are they specifically talking to Stephen Gerrard?

I assumed that they were speaking to some person in their life who is a Liverpool fan with whom they discuss things related to Liverpool.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think probably more the club in general than Gerrard. He's retired and he's the youth coach at LFC these days. I'm not an LFC supporter and can't remember seeing his name pop up in the wider football world news recently, so it's not likely he's the main target. I could be wrong though.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
If OP's beef is with Liverpool Football Club or Gerrard specifically or something, then I still think they should have been more specific.

I also still think it's possible that OP is talking about some argument that they had with a Liverpool fan, in which case I stand by my points.

Misfire?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Did you mean to post this comment to this thread?

"next year is going to be our year!" - liverpool fans, every year since 1990

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
But that's a pretty common sports fan mindset

Also Leicester fans, and then it really was our year and I don't think we'll ever be able to replicate that again.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-02 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've not met any that really thought it was likely to happen again, which was why it was just so magical when it did!

Football fanaticism is a hell of a drug tbh, I've seen otherwise very nice and reasonable people turn into complete monsters over their favourite teams.

The perfectly reasonable fans are cool though, I just usually can't chat to them about their sport because I know nothing about it.

It really is. I'll watch when my home team plays but I hate the way it warps some people. I was talking to a lad in the pub a while back and he went out to watch a game somewhere else, came back half an hour later with a black eye and his headphones broken. Got beaten up because he was a Man City supporter and no other reason. Fuck that.

Yeah the extremes people will go to over their teams is frightening tbh, where I lived at uni when it was match day you basically didn't go outside if you lived near the stadium, which we did. A store got vandalised when the local team lost on week, fun times.

I find this is how sport is - a form of tribalism - and why I don't have anywhere near as much interest in it as I used to.
