Holiday shopping/gifts thread!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Those of you who give gifts (Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, Kwanzaa) at this time of year, have you started your shopping yet? Finished already? Do you prefer to make your gifts instead? Do you not give gifts at all (holidays too commercialized, no money, aren't into gift-giving)?

Post about it here!

I'm almost done shopping. I have a couple of stocking stuffers left to get and I'm getting an E-gift certificate next week, and something for my dog like a bag of treats and a squeaky toy. I like to get shopping out of the way earlier so I have time to enjoy myself during the holidays without stressing about it at the last minute.

We are doing a small Christmas because two of us are unemployed. My sister and I are not even doing our secret Christmas this year!

I have items planned but haven't bought yet. My mom is giving me serious trouble like she does every year. The thing is that she's retired and her only hobbies are reading and movies, and she already buys everything she's into + a movie pass. She also hates the gimmicky, fun shit ("I hate clutter") and she's always low-key dieting so food doesn't work either.

Does she drink tea or coffee? There all kinds of fun/rare/obscure teas and coffees and their paraphernalia out there, and tea and coffee are dieting-friendly.

She does like coffee! In a very I ONLY DRINK THE STUFF FROM COSTCO AND IT MUST BE BLACK way, but she might accept a fun holiday variant lmao. Thanks!

Maybe you could find her really good autobiography of an actor or author she likes? It's so hard to shop for people who buy everything they want and don't like much of anything else.

Maybe a service-type thing, like Dollar Shave Club or a massage or a car detailing?

tbh the only books I *know* she likes are trashy romance novels, and she's slightly embarrassed by it so she doesn't like other people to know about it. The service-type thing is a REALLY GOOD idea though. I might look up something for car washes.

Yay! :)

This is like my Mom, too. Actually both my parents are terrible to shop for because they don't need *stuff*

I might go for another Open Table gift certificate for the two of them. That seemed to work out well, before.

Right? Last year, my mom finally had something she wanted (a meat thermometer) and then she went and bought it for herself months in advance.

I've also relied on gift cards for her. I try to avoid it because it's a "thoughtless" gift, but it's just one of the few things she seems to end up using. :\

We shop early and then maybe pick up a few extra things from Amazon during Black Friday/Weekend. This year we grabbed more BF deals than the last five years combined, but it was only like seven things. Most years we don't find anything and stockings are stuffed with silly things from Poundland.

Poundland is the bomb. We have one across from where I work and I love that place, even if they're constantly undercutting us pricewise.

I'm done shopping for my brother, have one thing for my sister (but I know what else I'm getting her so I'm not worried about her, just waiting for payday).

It's my mom I dunno what to get. I ask for suggestions I get 'oh, you know me, I like comfy things and stuff that's unique'. And I just... don't even know what to do with that. I never do.

I haven't started yet! My partner's birthday is in two days and I've got all his presents sorted, but it's the same problem every year where I get him everything he wants for his birthday and then have no idea what to give him for Christmas.

I quit my last job just before last Christmas and didn't have a lot of cash so I did handmade presents for everyone. They weren't brilliant but it was good fun.

I'm basically done. Need to get some stocking stuff, and i'm waiting on one thing that ships in like three days, and i don't want it sitting here for ages before Xmas, so i'll order it mid-December.

Otherwise -done! And i didn't spend all that much, either. Now just need that awesome cedar tree!

I haven't done my shopping for the kids charity thing yet. Last year there were a lot of problems with the branch I was donating to, so I think I'm going to look for a different group this year.

I ordered some jewelry for qt3.14 and a bunch of stuff off her steam WL that'll be delivered on Xmas eve (just in case she wants to start downloading something). I also a couple stocking stuffer things like chocolates and some fuzzy-lined gloves and stuff. I'm kind of freaking out though like DID I BUY ENOUGH?! TOO MUCH?! This is my first Xmas where I'm dating someone and also not so broke I can't afford to feed myself, so.....

I also sent out the prerequisite gift baskets to everyone at work, but I forgot to get the business associate holiday cards in the mail. D:

I started and I'm hoping to finish this weekend. I do make cookies to give to some of my family members, but I'm not crafty enough to make cool gifts.

I used to make the gifts I gave to friends, family, and co-workers. I don't anymore because I got tired of working on projects the whole year only for people to hate the stuff I made.

Haven't been able to due to money being too tight. :-(

Not doing gifts for specific people. Instead we do the X-mas gift game, where we each buy a little something for a set amount and then throw dice for them in two rounds on timelimit.
