Was your name used for fake comments to FCC?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I checked my name on this. As common as my real name is, I'm so glad I'm not named something like Laura Smith.

The Office of the New York State Attorney General is investigating whether public comments regarding net neutrality rules wrongfully used New Yorkers’ identities without their consent. We encourage you to search the FCC’s public comment website and tell us if you see any comments that misuse your name and address.

Yes, it was! Although I'm not a New Yorker.

I don't live in New York, there was one person with the same name as me who lives in Maryland (I don't live there either) and filed something but that was it.

Wait, did they have a really funny sounding address? Like 'Hoppy Tom Hollow' or something?

I did find my name, but it was a comment I actually submitted. I also don't live in New York.

I found a few matches until I put my name in quotes, and the ones I clicked on had my first name as a last name.

Someone with my same first and last name did leave a comment (my first name is not very common, but the first/last combination are of the same cultural origin, so it makes sense there would be more than one person with my name). She left a comment in favor of net neutrality, so no problems there. I don't live in New York and apparently neither does she.

I used my real name for that but a fake address. Should I be worried?

Huh. I did find one or two comments that looked like they might've used my stuff, but their comments were basically the same as mine, so eh.
