Ladies and gentleman, education in America.

Oh, come the fuck on

Eh? The American educational system needs a lot of work, but holding up the fact that a person didn't like a specific book isn't the damning proof you seem to think it is.

Okay, I'm the kind of person who casually insults Americans way more than necessary, but even I don't get where you're coming from here. It's okay to dislike a book, and it makes perfect sense to outright despise it if you're being forced to read it.

For instance, I acted exactly like this when I had to read Catcher in the Rye in school.

Yup. To this day I cringe at the idea of having to read anything by Margaret Atwood ever again because I loathed having to read her stuff in school.

That's a Canadian, thing, right? Because I just read your comment and cried out in longing at the thought of reading Atwood in school rather than the shit I was forced to read.

Same, except my "school" was college. Had to read some bullshit by her for a Literature and Ecology class (which I otherwise loved!) and have been completely soured on her ever since.

Lord of the Flies for me. Probably would have enjoyed it if I hadn't had to listen to it read aloud by my fellow fourteen year olds and then take hours to discuss every aspect to death.

I hardly think that one person's dislike for what is objectively a very unusual narrative style means every American is a semi literate boor
