Edward VIII abdicated the throne because his intention to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson was seen as politically and constitutionally unacceptable:

Of course, it's not a perfect comparison. Edward was the king; Harry is unlikely to ever be king. Wallis Simpson was seen as basically a gold-digger; Markle isn't in a similar position. And finally, Edward VIII abdicated 81 fucking years ago.

Also, Edward was a Nazi sympathiser and given to trying to meddle in politics, and some of the government were pretty relieved to have a solid reason to lever him out.

So actually, Edward abdicating to marry Wallis Simpson was probably the best thing he did for his country.

In any case, their marriage did last and seems to have been reasonably successful, in a bitter, resentful, Nazi-loving sort of way. So....
