What movies do you like better than the original work?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So books, video games, anime, whatever.

I like the movie version of The Postman much more than the book. The book kinda lost me at the super mutants.

The Princess Bride. I thought I'd like the book better because that's often the way of things, but... nope.

I've said it before, the movie version of My Sister's Keeper is leagues better than the book because they change the ending.

Interview With A Vampire is a way more exciting to consume than the boring as hell book.

Having read a couple of Anne Rice novels in the past, I can understand that. Her writing is annoyingly dense.

Forrest Gump. hated the book.

I didn't even know Forrest Gump was a book until earlier this year when I was reading some clickbaity "article" from Facebook.

OMG, yes. The book is just...fuckin' weird.

All movie adaptations of Dickens stories.

Ditto anything written by John Irving.

A Christmas Story. The book is... eeeh.

Eragon. The movie is a generic vaguely watchable fantasy movie with a dragon, which means it's so much better than the book they're not even in the same league.

How to Train Your Dragon. If nothing else, they didn't have Toothless talking like Jar Jar Binks.

Detroit Metal City fares insanely better as a movie than a manga. It trimmed a lot of the unnecessary fat, and I think the sound and color of metal is absolutely vital to the whole thing working right. Plus, the casting was perfect, and the editing decisions were so on-point it was wonderful. I can't go back to reading it, even though the story continues further past the arc where the movie cuts off.

As much as I bag on Marvel movies for being just as big and dumb as Michael Bay but more popular, they're still better than much of the comics fuckery.

Yeah, anyone remember when Spidey was revealed to be the shaman/avatar of a spider-god, came back from the dead with a Jesus complex, and grew Wolverine-esque claws from his forearms....

.... if you don't THANK THE GODS!

The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I don't find Tolkein's writing style enjoyable 90% of the time, but I like the story itself.

+1. I find Tolkien's writing on the dry side. For me, the films are exciting and emotional and the characters are engaging, and the books just fall flat. Props for his worldbuilding, though.

I have read LotR, but I do agree the movies make it easier to absorb by huge amounts.

Also, Mum has never been able to read the books (and her brother tried to talk her into reading The Hobbit in the 70s) so the movies are also the best way for her as well.

The Prestige. Great movie, and the book is okay but moves a lot slower and I think the movie amped up the suspense and twist at the end but... I can't remember because the book wasn't very memorable, IMO.

Clue - I like the game, but the movie is more fun.
Jurassic Park - I liked the book, but the movie was better.
Jaws - Ditto.
Pirates of the Caribbean (the first movie) - didn't really care for the ride.
A couple of the Mission: Impossible movies, but not all of them, were slightly better than the original TV series.

The Talented Mr. Ripley. I love the movie, but don't care for the book overly much.

Pride & Prejudice (Yup, the 2005 one). I like the book, but I love the movie.
