Overrated fanfiction?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
What are the most overrated fics in your fandom(s)? Are they outright bad or just not as good as they're played up to be?

To start off, I was disappointed in Poke Wars, but that may just be because I don't really like darkfics, and I thought it was being edgy for the sake of being edgy most of the time.

There was this series of fics from the MCU fandom that were hugely popular. I have no idea why because they were horribly written. I don't remember much about them except I think the title was something like, 'The Queer Avengers Do Stuff'.

I'm queer and that title is setting off my rage. Is it not bad enough that people IRL insist on defining queer people solely by our orientation. Do you HAVE to drag that bullshit into fandom so blatantly? My "straight girl who likes to fantasize about hawt gay guys" o meter is going off.

Yeah, it was such a weird story. I think I read like the first chapter. But from what I recall there was like...a lot of woobification of characters and emo stuff.

This is just my personal experience, but: my sense is that stuff doesn't come out of "straight-girl-fantasy"; my sense is that it mostly appeals to young people who are queer, or questioning their identities, and want to see fiction that's fundamentally about those topics.

This. There's certainly a strain of fic that rings very straight-girl-fantasy, but "the characters are queer and do things and did I mention they're queer" smacks a lot more of young or immature writers who are using fic as a way to explore their concept of identity in a relatively safe space.

That or trolls writing parodyfic because they're outraged by the existence of ~the SJWs~.

Oh yeah I remember those! idr anyone ever actually reccing them anywhere, or saying they were good. But they had so many kudos and hits and shit.

I tried to read the first one and I gave up about halfway through iirc. So bad!

Yeah, they had an obscene amount of kudos. It was so confusing.

idk I never found it confusing, just kind of predictable. There was a really popular Kingdom Hearts fanfic that followed basically the same formula.

Get super popular characters, and make all of them super duper gay. Pick the most popular pairings in the fandom, preferably. Doesn't matter how OOC they are. In fact, making them a parody of themselves is better. Stick them in situations the average reader would be familiar with (High School, coffee shop, domestic fluff in the Avengers tower). Maybe throw in some descriptions of the cool clothes they're always wearing. Make sure there's some low stakes drama, like a miscommunication. Instant fucking kudos.

When I was in Batman fandom, there were two superpopular fanfic series. One was focused on Batman/Catwoman, and suffered from severe character derailment for Batman's love interests who weren't Catwoman (Talia al Ghul and Poison Ivy got it especially badly), and it had unfortunate implications (i.e, retconning away Renee Montoya being a lesbian in canon).

The other focused on the Scarecrow and several original characters. I liked it at the time, and it holds up better than the first one, but on a reread I think it overplayed pop culture references and the dark comedy occasionally skirted into "that's-not-funny" territory.

Both Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness and Methods of Rationality are pretentious dreck and I will never understand their popularity.

In the J/7 fandom, it seems like just about everyone worships Gina Dartt's Just Between series, but I thought that it was supremely OOC and preachy, plus it had kind of a moralizing "this is what healthy lesbian relationships are supposed to be like" vibe. Also, she turned Ro Laren into the ultimate Mary Sue and at one point had Seven in a pinafore, making dinner while waiting for Janeway to come home. Dartt even made floorplans for the damn thing.

What is Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness?

Grimdark fic about Neville et al at Hogwarts during Book 7. There's a sequel where they fight the IRA, for some reason. It's really grimdark and the author turned out to be some kind of ridiculous sociopath drama monster.

Eidolon, the thorki fic?

It's not BAD. idek if it ever finished, I stopped reading when it was still a WIP back in the early days of MCU Thor fandom. But the pacing is awful. The first 50k+ words are just "Loki is a jotun on jotunheim" worldbuildy stuff. Which, that's fine if that's what you were expecting. But I (and a lot of other people I follow) went into it thinking it was a cool Thorki story and that doesn't even start until you've read a fucking novel about Loki and some merry band of OCs having a political adventure?

This Game We Play in the Angbang fandom. I like the author's writing style. I like her other works, for the most part. This one I can even enjoy. But she doesn't seem to really understand the main character at all. At least, I don't agree with her interpretations of Sauron at all. And yet her fic is how I was introduced to the ship and how most people are.

There was this fic series in the Star Wars/Kylux fandom that was hugely revered. I don't know if I remember it correctly but I think the series title was "Children, wake up" or something?
It started out alright but later turned into this mess of ultra-woobification, downright ridiculously contrived drama and massive OOCness.

I looked at some of the author's other fic and noticed I had actually read some of her stuff in different fandoms as well. She seems to have this pattern where she puts characters in all sorts of traumatising and extreme situations to justify some massive changes in their characterisation. In the end, the character always basically turn into her OCs who have nothing in common with their original characterisations anymore.
