NAYRT- yeah, context is really important for that one. There was some shit going down in various African countries that year, hence the famine relief efforts and the Liveaid concert. Yeah, the song’s condescending, but more in the “let’s monolith a whole continent as one giant desert hellhole” sense than in actually thinking people literally didn’t know what day it was. And the people leading the relief effort were willing to ignore the ignorance for the $30 million they got out of it. The song is still an overwrought, melodramatic mess that uses the phrase “clanging chimes of doom” unironically, so they can stop playing it now.
