Not that anon, but I've had several ships in the past where one character said the other was like their brother or sister, and then the ship eneded up being canon when the character realized their feelings were deeper than that or admitted that they were lying because they didn't want to accept their feelings. Not saying Sheith will be canon, but it's a pretty common trope. IMO the problem here is that it's a gay ship, not the "like a brother" line itself. If it was het I honestly wouldn't think something like that was an issue.
