This happens every day

"Hey. You going to sleep now?"

I bristled at the familiar question. Yes, I was about to go back to sleep. I was tired, I was comfortable, it was early, I had the day off, and the neighbors weren't causing a ruckus. This time I would stand my ground and go back to sleep.

"You gotta empty me first."

"Leave me alone," I thought to the impertinent brat also known as my bladder. "You're not that full. If I were at work, I'd totally ignore you."

"But you're not at work," it pointed out, metaphysically shaking my shoulder so as to rouse me.

"All the more reason not to drop what I'm doing and indulge you." When had it learned this habit? I knew a few years ago I could have fallen right back asleep without getting up to pee, unless I'd had a lot to drink and hadn't gone before I went to sleep -- neither of which was true of my current situation. When did it learn to pester me specifically when I was trying to fall asleep?

"You gotta go," it said.

I shut it out.

It went into my brain, turned up the radio, and started rambling, a stream of consciousness I didn't care anything about except for the fact that it was preventing me from resuming a perfectly good sleep. I shifted my legs. It quieted, just a little. It was still there. Still making it its business to harass me until I gave in.

"Do what it says, or we'll never get back to sleep," my brain complained.

Fine. I got up and went to the bathroom as quick as I could, then turned right around and crawled back into my bed.

I waited. "What's the damn holdup?" I asked my brain.

"You've gotten up. I can't get back to sleep now," my brain pouted. My bladder grinned at me from its corner. I hated them both.
