The person may have meant that that for someone supposed to be Spanish (Caspian and his people were intended to be a pseudo-Spanish people, No? at least that's how I felt they were portrayed), he didn't look seem terribly Spanish. I don't know much about Spanish cuisine, but a staple of Latin American cuisine is rice & beans, so to the person he was a poor representation... which is kind of funny because there are Spanish people darker than him, yes, but there are those who are far more pale, blue eyed and blonde...they also might have been conflating Spanish with Latin American. People do this often.

I suspected it might have been something like that re: "too pale to be Spanish" stated by someone with no clue about what Spanish people can look like.

Yep, I think they were conflating it with Latin America. Spain is majority white.*

They certainly haven't been to Galicia, because it's full of people who you might well guess were Scots or Irish, for the good reason that there is a very substantial ethnic overlap. Case in point: Martin Sheen. And even further south, the average skin tone is not all that dark.

I am a Scot. I have dark hair, dark eyes - pasty skin. I have a Galician friend who has not infrequently been mistaken for my sister.

* And yes, sure, race is ideologically constructed and all that, but this is not a 'deciding to class the Japanese as white because it's economically convenient' situation.
