But what work did he do? I'm curious because I just don't see why so many people think he's tragic and should've gotten redemption and whatnot. I mean, if he'd done what he did because he seriously wanted to help people and make the world a better place then I'd understand, but this phase lasted for about five whole minutes before he went "I'LL BE A GOD MUAHAHAHA" and he pretty much stayed like that till the end. He's a good character, I'll give him that (if not one I find particularly interesting for me), but tragic...?

Yeah, but his desire to be a God comes from his initial urge to stop crime happening. It's a sick, twisted desire to look over the state and kill anything that threatens him, and his goals become SEVERELY misdirected as the series goes on, but I still think he qualifies as tragic; mainly for how he is in the beginning (a genuinely charming, studious Yamada Taro) and the brief glimpses of him when he suffers from Death Note-induced amnesia. I do wish the creator hd expanded on those parts though, it would have made him a bit deeper...

Dunno... it may be just me but I didn't really get the impression that he was a nice, ordinary Everyday Guy from the beginning. I mean, if he was he wouldn't have ended up this way. (I always thought of pre-DN Light as a (stereo)typical frustrated Japanese honor student/model salaryman/etc. - polite, studious, all-around Nice Guy with a ton of frustration seething under the surface, ready to snap in any moment and god help people around him when it happens.)

Sure, he might have meant good at first, but any good he might've meant is completely overshadowed by what he actually did and wanted to do, and I just can't see how that five minute flash of "I want to help society" qualifies as anything but an excuse. I agree, though, that if the creator had expanded more on his character he could've became more well-rounded and interesting (for me, anyway), but as it is...
