I wasn't specifically supporting Light's actions in the book (which was the original topic of the secret so I could have been clearer), but rather supporting debate between sides as opposed having someone "tell" everyone which side is right.

I was annoyed by the OP's view that s/he was automatically right because she favoured the path that involved less brutal actions even though those actions may have had good intentions (i.e. Light originally intended to preserve justice, I think? Or was he a megalomaniac from the start? Haven't read the manga for a while, so this might not be the best example). Although I like DN, I'm not in the fandom and therefore am not a part of the "Was Light right or wrong" debate. My assumption was that people who "think Light did right" thought so because of his intentions to prevent crime, and that their actions in pursuing that goal would differ from his. Not knowing any of these people myself, I might have assumed wrong in which case the OP may have a point. However, I still object to him or her making her point as if it were the absolute truth out of fear of "lynching" instead of inviting debate.

So, sorry, I can't really reply to your argument against Light because I wasn't actually arguing for Light. D: I feel bad seeing as I'm trying to promote debate. I could try and come up with an opinion now? :'D TBH I just read DN for funsies!

Haha, I'm not in the fandom either (I don't even like Death Note, I only watched it because it was on TV and I had nothing better to do those nights), but I've seen more than enough "Light is right and he should've won!!111" people to know where the OP comes from. Sure, most of these people don't seem to think about what they're saying, they only try to sound hardcore and edgy, but they really don't seem to understand that a world ruled by a nutjob murderer with a god complex =/= good even if it does prevent crime. And in my experience most of them are rabid enough for the OP to be afraid of getting flamed for her opinion, exactly with the arguments you used, which is why my Pavlovian reflex kicked in.

(On the other hand, I have a feeling that most of Light's supporters would be totally against him if he wasn't a charming pretty boy...)

Oh, seriously? :\ I'm really glad I haven't come across any rabid fans like that, they sound horribly annoying. Damn you, Light, and your Zac Effron-esque charms!*
