I feel the same about quite a few things like that too (i.e. lyrics I thought were SO deep...lol ok yeah). I still enjoy these things, but the fervor of my adolescence has faded. Consequence of growing up, I guess.

Art is pretty tho.

I'm not familiar with this, but are codependency issues somehow unworthy of being dressed up with crow-skull men and mermaids? I read a manga once that dressed up codependency issues with magical curses and serial killers, and it was pretty good.

Ooh, what manga was that?

The Severing Crime Edge. Pro tip: buy the official translation off of Bookwalker. It’s way better than the scans.

Thank you!

We all process in our own way, OP.

On the flipside, I've read interviews with creators where they just did some flippant bit of humour or whatever, and years later a fan told them how much it meant to them - taught them something new, or a rare scrap of representation, or a bit of light when there world is just one big suck. Right time and place, basically.

We all process in our own way.

Until you said it was a crow skull, I couldn't tell what the hell that thing's head was supposed to be

(Anonymous) 2017-12-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Omg I still didn't get that.

Don't care about deep. The art is pretty and monsterdudes is my thing, so...

Like other users have noted, I think this is a normal part of growing up. I wouldn't necessarily think of it as a veil being pulled back because that seems a touch dramatic... it's just that sometimes the things that you liked and had great meaning for you don't always stand the test of time.

IMO "depth" is largely in the eye/mind/heart of the beholder. What really matters, imo, is whether you find meaning in something. Is it striking to you? Does it move you in some way? I don't think the art in the secret is inherently deep or shallow, nor is it inherently mature or immature.

Honestly, the one thing I find immature is the tendency of people to use the concept of depth/lack of depth as a way of assigning value to things that are subjective in their value.

The art is beautiful.
