I once read someone's essay on Bull and the results of his loyalty mission, and basically boiled it down to Bull having a deep attachment to the Chargers, so if the Inquisitor sacrifices them, it basically tells Bull that he only belongs to the Qun that was always going to turn on the Inquisitor when it became advantageous, therefore with only the Qun to rely on... Bull betrays the Inquisitor in the end.

If the Inquisitor chooses to go against the Qun, it not only forces Bull out of the Qunari, but also keeps his emotional anchor and the thing that made him indulge in non-Qun habits - his deep attachment to the Chargers, and particularly Krem, whose life he saved. Therefore with his loyalties to the Qun firmly broken, he sticks to what he has found as a replacement, which includes potential romance with either the Inquisitor or Dorian.

Also, he totally lets the Inquisitor know he;s reporting back to the Arishok, but is so dissarming about it that one does not take it seriously - both Inquisitor and player.

I yeah, I know. It's totally in keeping with the results of that mission for him to betray you. (And I was actually really happy when I saw they'd included that in Trespasser, because otherwise him being a Qunari has basically no weight at all.)

He let's the Inquisitor know he's reporting back, but during Trespasser someone is giving the Qunari a lot more relevant info than he claims he's sending. iirc Bull even tells you in Trespasser that the info isn't coming from him if he's loyal, which.... that's still pretty shady?

My problem isn't him betraying Dorian, I think that makes perfect sense. My problem is that Bull is a pushy asshole and imo it makes sense that he's been literally betraying Dorian since the start, long before his loyalty mission or Trespasser, and people holding up their relationship as some pure sweet thing is fucking creepy af imo.

Dorian is really vulnerable to 'nice' people. People like his father, or the Inquisitor, or Bull. And he's the perfect target for a spy like Bull, a lonely isolated Tevinter Altus with connections to the Magisterium and the Inquisition leadership (particularly Cullen). And Bull is great at making friends and influencing people. There's a solid chance he decided to hook up with Dorian specifically because it would be so advantageous to the Qun.

I'm the anon you were talking to before, and yeah, I agree with all of this.

It's perfectly in character for him to do what he does, I'd never dispute that, but, y'know, if your friendship with a completely unrelated person is what makes the difference between whether you murder your boyfriend or not, I'm pretty sure that qualifies as an unhealthy relationship. It's definitely telling that Dorian is apparently entirely helpless in his own relationship, can't do or influence anything about it without a mutual friend there to save it for him, and, yeah. "Yikes" about sums it up.

And to constantly see fans praise it as some super cute & happy relationship is ... strange. But I do tend to disagree with a lot of the more popular fanon characterizations in this fandom; alongside the facts that Vivienne is by far my favourite Inquisition character, and Origins is my least favourite game, I'm pretty much a walking combination of all of this fandom's least popular opinions, so I guess it just is what it is, hahaha.
