Amy Adams reminds me of someone I mildly dislike and that's how I tell them apart. If I feel slightly grumpy for no reason when I see one of them, that is Amy Adams.

Sorry Amy Adams. I'm sure you're a nice person.

:/

I saw an old Graham Norton show (she was on with Affleck and Cavill) and I found her really funny and charming.

(But you should probably forget I said that so that your rule of thumb continues to work.)

I never actually recognize Isla Fisher so this is less of a problem for me

I remember reading an interview with Isla Fisher where she said that she replaced her face with Amy Adams' on her Christmas cards, and no one noticed the switch.

I mean, I often struggle with telling certain actors apart, but at least these two have different eye colours?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I always get Amy Adams and Jenna Fischer (Pam from The Office) mixed up :/

I don't think it's questionable at all, really. Not when it comes to Hollywood actors, because you tend to see them in different roles with slightly different appearances all the time. It means minor differences between two individuals seem less significant because it could plausibly by the same person with slightly different hair, make-up, clothes, lighting, etc.

This is, IMO, exacerbated by the fact that Hollywood tends to cast a lot of leading male and female roles very predictably to fit a relatively narrow range of physical types. A lot of leading men are going to be tall, white, athletic build, square jaw, etc. A lot of leading women are going to be slender/skinny, white, etc. and both will tend to be conventionally good looking in a slightly homogeneous way.

ia I don't see why it's questionable to have difficulty telling actors apart.

I don't have a problem telling most male actors apart (though I sometimes have trouble recognizing them in pictures). Many of them look similar, but there's a much wider range of "Hollywood Attractive" that they can fall into. Like, Ryan Gosling, Chris Hemsworth, and Ryan Reynolds are all classic leading male types, but they all have very different face shapes.

But a lot of female actors it's very hard. These two look very similar except for coloration. They also look very similar to Kiera Knightly, Natalie Portman, Daisy Ridley, Winona Ryder, Katie Mcgrath, and probably half the top actresses in Hollywood. Yeah there's differences, but if you stuck them all in a lineup with the same hair and makeup and clothes I think most people would have a very hard time telling them apart. And women who don't quite "fit in" with the standard often vary from it only slightly, like Jamie Alexander has rounded eyebrows or ScarJo has a unusual mouth shape.

Agreed. I think the range for Hollywood considers conventionally good looking is even narrower for women, particularly when it comes to general features like face and body type. You're not even going to get variations like "wiry but athletic build" to "large and ripped" like you do for men.

wasn't Kiera Knightly used as Padme's (Natalie Portman's) double in Star Wars? I mean, chosen as an intentional thing because at that age she did look a lot like Portman with the right make up on?

Of course I'd be able to tell the difference between them in a line up though. Kiera always has her mouth vacantly open when she's posing for pictures.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-11 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well sure, it got her the part in Star Wars, but she's since gone on to have plenty of roles on her own. And holy crap I hate that habit she has of just... letting her mouth hang open slightly. I don't know if she's trying to look sexy or what, but she just looks kind of vacant.

I seriously thought, "Wait, how can you confuse Isla for Bryce Dallas Howard?" for a second. So, good news, I can recognise Isla Fisher at least some of the time. Not all the time, though.

Seriously, though, they do look alike, but not that much for redheaded actresses.

sa - sorry for broken tag

That's what I get for commenting anon.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-11 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I confuse Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain all the time.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-11 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Bryce Dallas Howard > prettier than Jessica Chastain.

Amy Adams > prettier than Isla Fisher.

This is how you tell them apart.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The first 30 minutes of Pacific Rim, I was extremely confused because I didn't realize the character that was in an action scene earlier is the same character that was on a construction site looking rougher with different clothes. I thought they were gonna go save that other dude or something, but the dialogue and emotions didn't line up with my assumption, and it was just really, really weird until it hit me WAIT THAT'S THE SAME GUY ISN'T IT and the story finally made sense. And this is just a mostly mindless action movie.

I've tried testing myself, and I don't think I'm actually face blind, either. I can tell faces apart, I just can't memorize them. If you put two photos together, yes, I can see the difference. But if you give me one photo, then take me away and give me another, and they're both Hollywood style makeup and clothing...yeah no, they look the same.

The actress I always mix up with Amy Adams is Joanna Garcia Swisher.
