Remember that the key part of Civil War fuckery in the comics was that Reed Richards read Asimov's Foundation, decided to create sociohistory as a hobby project, and predicted the mutant/supehero apocalypse from Runaways.

NAYRT, but fucking Reed, man. The scariest thing in the Marvel universe is that Franklin Richards has Reed as one of his role models.

Not only do you have a man whose intellect should be regulated as a WMD, but he independently pulled the rest of Marvel comics into the tangled mess that's Days of Future Past dystopia prophesy.

(So tangled, that X-men devoted multiple story arcs to retcon the retcon they retconned to retcon a trivial paradox involving one of the Summers brats.)

EDIT: Anyway, much of Civil War was driven by Reed crunching the numbers and shrieking, "if we don't do this VERY BAD THING, something will happen in the future that's EVEN WORSE! Trust me, I'M THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE STORY."
