Comments like this baffle me, because it's basically like she's screwed if she acts like every other actor who thinks their shit doesn't stink and that they're better than 'common folk', and she's screwed if she acts approachable and normal.

What do you guys want from people?

idk anything about Jennifer Lawrence specifically so idk how she comes across in interviews. But there's plenty of celebrities that come across as normal people without going out of their way to lay it on super thick.

Like Keanu Reeves doesn't have to go on talk shows and talk about how he binges on junk food and fanboys over Star Wars and spends his entire net worth on charity each year for people to think he seems like a sweet down to earth dude.

He's a dude, so the expectations aren't there for him to be performative in any way. He could be openly rude (see: Harrison Ford etc.) and still be adored, whereas women have to do this OTT performative 'I'm your bff!' and get called tryhard, but the ones who don't will get equally slated.)

See, I can see why a woman in Hollywood would feel like she has to do the OTT performance, but judging by what other actors do I don't think it's actually necessary.

I've watched a fair number of interviews and stuff with women in Hollywood over the years. ScarJo, Milla Jovovich, Jamie Alexander, Cate Blanchett, Jenette Goldstein, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, you name it. A couple have done the cringey OTT shit. (haha I'm soooo normal guys, guys, I just see a donut and I'm like damn I want thirty donuts hahaha amiright guys?) it's like the celebrity version of an out-of-touch adult trying to act hip in front of some teens. The rest of them have just acted naturally and thus come across as regular people.

No viewer is judging an actor based on how many hamburger binge anecdotes they have, or how many of their stories devolve into "you might be a redneck" jokes. They judge based on whether the person seems nice and genuine in the way they interact with the people they're talking to. The women who are legit are still famous, they still have fans, no one thinks they're a bitch just because they didn't tell enough stories about going to the store in sweatpants. I mean, jesus, Gwyneth Paltrow has made an entire website dedicated to how fucking wealthy and out of touch she is, and people still like her.

No kidding. And who says it's fake, anyway? She seems like a genuinely fun person.

There's quite a wide range between "act like their shit doesn't stink" and "puts on a huge act about being relatable and just like you", though. What people are taking issue with here isn't that JLaw behaves normally, it's that she doesn't - that her attempt to behave like she's not a rich Hollywood star comes off badly because it feels exaggerated and fake.

I think you're missing the point - that it feels like acting rather than being herself. Putting on a show and being over the top just isn't likable, even for an actor. Especially when your whole thing is that you're so ~real~.

I've met non-famous women who always want to talk about how awkward and weird they are all the time and it's boring and annoying and frankly kind of off-putting. Yeah, we're all awkward and weird sometimes. It's okay to talk about it, but insisting on broadcasting it to strangers is not the best strategy.

Famous actresses should just talk like normal people and not the klutzy heroine of a rom-com. Most of them manage this just fine, so it sticks out when someone insists on drawing attention to how imperfect they are.
