[Neil Gaiman, Good Omens]

People in my fandom do this all the time and I agree that it's annoying, but at the same time, I understand why it happens. People who are not so involved don't realize that their question is not original and has been answered already so it doesn't occur to them to Google.

Holy shit Gaiman has the patience of... a really really patient thing. A saint? (Are they patient?)

I get pissed when people in subreddits ask/post the same question/observation 3 or 4 times a week.

Arghh, I hate that. People are so lazy they don't bother to use the search function or check the faq. Sometimes there are identical threads on first page, ffs!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And it pisses me off, partly because I also suspect it of being cheap karma-mongering, which I cannot bring myself to do. :p

I could have sworn my copy of Good Omens had a footnote about Dick Turpin, but I just looked and it didn't. "Just Google it" wasn't a thing when I bought it in 1996 and I'm not sure how I figured out the reference, although I think I got an inkling from the "holding up traffic" punchline and then read some kid of "annotated Good Omens" website later on.

On the other hand, the guy is constantly flooded with asks and messages, and selectively chooses which ones to respond to. If he chooses to waste his time answering a question that's easily solvable, that's his problem.

I actually just want insight into the mind of people who do this. I assume some are just really really new to the internet?

People like this drive me nuts. I get that you want some attention from a famous author, I really do. But wouldn't it be better to do it in a more positive way, like... I don't know, making cool fanart or something? I'd be mortified if I asked one of my favorite authors what turned out to be a really dumb question.
killertofuuu: (wtf am i reading)

"Stupid superwholock username"

That's my favorite thing about this secret, tbh.

Always Gaiman. I think he just likes answering those.

And maybe the questioner just doesn't know a better question to ask. I feel the point to asking celebrities a question isn't necessarily to know the answer but to interact with the celebrity. Perhaps Neil has just figured that out. (I mean, maybe he hasn't but surely he gets questions from people who have done as you would?)

I love reading his responses to all questions, really, but there's a special place in my heart for the truly dumb/easy to Google questions.

I don't know who Dick Turpin is, so I didn't get the reference either (it's also been a few years since I last read Good Omens, so I don't even remember the reference), but if I was curious about it, my first step would be Google.
