Irony and Coincidences

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
So, I live alone. I'm 30. I moved out from home over a decade ago. 90% of the time I'm a responsible adult. But the one time I think, what the hell, and crack open a bottle of wine my students gave me as a thank you to spend a nice little me-evening... my parents start skyping. And I have to do the childish game of pretending to be completely sober while ever-so-painstakingly-typing-so-that-nobody-can-tell-thank-god-for-spell-checkers. WHY???

Share your own stupid irony / coincidence story - misery loves company.

Quite generally, people keep eating every lie I tell right out of my hands and I never get caught. But at the same time, I get accused of lying when telling the absolute truth. It's weird.

Same for me - some of the biggest lies I've told have been because people didn't want to believe the truth and kept hounding me to tell them the REAL story. In the end, people believe what they want to believe.

Me and some friends/family went to a little Cornish town called Looe for a week holiday. The night before we left we played slightly drunken Scrabble (we know how to live it up) and the first four letters my friend pulled out the bag spelled LOOE, in the exact right order. Spooks.

Please tell me that you also made a ton of groanfully bad jokes about "going to the looe" while on that trip ;)

Absolutely. We shoehorned in every bit of wordplay we could for that one. :P

slightly drunken Scrabble?

You are my kind of people! Tell me you also play slightly drunken trivial pursuits/jeopardy and I think we could be friends...

Haha, Scrabble is a mainstay in our circle! Not enough people play board games these days. We do try Trivial Pursuit every now and then but I'm definitely the worst out of our group for it. My mother was apparently so legendarily good at it that she beat my dad (twice) while in labour with me. :> Dedication.

a former friend of mine decided to start an argument with me on the street and someone's car stereo was playing "This Will Be the Last Time" by the Rolling Stones the entire time.

That's very cinematic

So I can't think of anything super ironic, but I have weird weather coincidences.

It's always rained on... I'm not sure how to phrase this, but... important days where I was moving on to a new stage in life? So, every time I've moved, my last day at every school, last day of high school and then again on graduation, leaving my ex, leaving jobs, the days I've broken things off with friends, days where I've coincidentally had to make huge decisions about my future, all of it. (And I haven't ever lived in a place where constant rain is common, so this is weird.)

I've also always had a white Christmas. (Maybe this year will break the pattern, it's been so hot.) Even when I've spent it on like, the gulf coast and shit, it's always snowed.

Hm. You may be a sort of precipitation spirit.

I was having a really hard week and started breaking down in the middle of a Macy's store, so I ran to the restroom, locked myself in a stall, and started crying. That particular Macy's has music playing in the restrooms and "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World started playing. I started laughing because it was kinda funny that there I was, feeling like shit, and this song comes on telling me that everything was gonna be just fine.

Kind of a sad one, sorry to bring the thread down, but pet and family deaths tend to happen on holidays. My mother died on mothers day years ago. Now major holidays make me kind of nervous.

When my mom died earlier this year on July 10th I didn’t figure out why I’d felt like the day was already sad until a couple days later—two years before, we’d had to put down my first dog, who my mom really loved. I don’t believe in in afterlife but I hope there is one so they could see each other again.

Alabama joined statehood in 14 december 1819. Democrat win in that senate/state.... maybe.

Sandy hook elementary school remembrance happened today.

To the birthday boys and girls, remember.

For the record, you shouldn't have to pretend to be sober for your parents (unless you're doing something you really shouldn't be intoxicated for). You're an adult. You can get mildly buzzed - or even full-on drunk - when you want to. I hope they respect that.
