Most people aren't deep enough into figure skating to care beyond the surface level, so of course the scandal would be bigger news. It's like people talking about American football players kneeling during the national anthem and not talking about the players abilities at the same time.

A lot of people are into football, though. I can see how it would be frustrating when the only thing that's known about your favorite sport is an ugly scandal like that.
