So what is the problem? Movies are getting made all the time. Sometimes they are from past events. Especially when it's about real people.

It would be stupid if they made a movie of something INSTANTLY after it happened rather than wait years to see how the dust has settled.

As for why now... why not? They make WWII movies all the time despite it being in the past. Why not make a biopic about a scandal that was pretty huge in the news when it happened. There is obviously an interest in that sort of thing. Also winter olympics coming up.
